The Jaffo Gate Quartet is een swingende vocal group, ontstaan in 1983. De groep bestaat uit Alfons Wielingen, eerste tenor, Stan Hoepel, tweede tenor, Gerson Neslo, bariton(leider) en Winston McDonald, bas.

 

Het repertoire van de groep bestaat uit jazzy negrospirituals, meeslepende ballads en swingende standards. Omdat The Jaffo Gate Quartet verschillende songs in diverse stijlen zingt, is het repertoire voor velen aantrekkelijk.

 

The Jaffo Gate Quartet zingt in de traditie van het roemruchte Golden Gate Quartet en The Mills Brothers, vocal-groepen die in de jaren veertig een enorme populariteit genoten in  Amerika.

Bekende songs van die groepen werden en worden door de eigen arrangeur van The Jaffo Gate Quartet nieuw leven ingeblazen.

 

Hoewel het kwartet bekend is geworden door de bekoorlijke a capella-zang, treedt het steeds vaker op met haar vaste begeleiders. Bassist Ben Alwart, drummer Edgar Darnoud en pianist Glenn Gaddum begeleiden het kwartet op de manier zoals begeleiders van The Golden Gate Quartet en The Mills Brothers dit 40 jaar geleden deden. Zo blijft de originele sound behouden en vormen zang en begeleiding een hechte eenheid.

 

De groep geniet grote bekendheid in Nederland en omliggende landen.

Zij maakte succesvolle tournees door Zwitserland, Polen, Oostenrijk, België en Suriname en gaf concerten in Engeland en Frankrijk. Vooral in Duitsland wordt zij steeds bekender na een serie concerten in 1995.

 

The Jaffo Gate Quartet treedt op tijdens kerkdiensten, huwelijksinzegeningen, bedrijfsfeesten, jazzfestivals en geeft veel concerten. Naast optreden in

theaters, schouwburgen en concertzalen is het kwartet regelmatig te horen en te zien op radio en televisie.

The Jaffo Gate Quartet  sings in the tradition of the famous Golden Gate Quartet and Mills Brothers, vocal groups in the forties enormously popular in America. Famous songs of those groups were given fresh arrangements by the Jaffo Gate Quartet’s own arranger and got a new life.

 

 

Although the quartet became famous thanks to the charming a capella, it performs more and more together with its permanent accompanists.

Bassist Ben Alwart, drummer Edgar Darnoud en pianist Glenn Gaddum accompany the quartet in the same way the accompanists of the Golden Gate Quartet and the Mills Brothers did forty years ago. In this way the original sound persists and song and accompaniment form a knit unit.

 

The group is widely known in the Netherlands and neighbouring countries. It has  toured successfully through Switzerland, Poland, Austria, Belgium and Surinam and gave concerts in England and France. Especially in Germany it is becoming more and more famous since a series of concerts 1995.

 

The Jaffo Gate Quartet performs during church services, marriage ceremonies,

company parties, jazz festivals and gives concerts. Besides performances

in theatres and concert halls the quartet is regularly on the radio and television.
